btw: this week's festival performance by the Vandermark 5 at Schuba's may be the last local show by this band for a long time - the Vandermark 5 is going on extended hiatus after this month

- I guess if I list Mission of Burma, I have to list Ministry - one more thing not in the calendar: last year on my way to Doc Films I stumbled into the Carifete street fair on the midway just south of Hyde Park, it was the most amazing thing, a kaleidoscope of Jamaican sound systems, carnaval costumes and vendors, near chaos, but at some point today or tomorrow there will be a steel drum band playing....

NEWS, Highlights, Updates & Corrections:

- Sonore was a-mazing - if you missed it, well there is the new Okkadisk cd

- gotta tell ya, Daniele D'Agaro is one of my all time favorites, he swings effortlessly between outside and in the pocket. if you're looking for something to do after the Corbett vs. Dempsey gallery opening above Dusty Groove on Friday, slide on down to the Velvet, or check out a freer-form trio at the Candlestick Maker - you will thank me later....

<Cost of War counter>
- this is money flowing from our wallets straight to Haliburton -

dear friends, I know the anti-war message which you see here weekly can be seen as "preaching to the converted" but each of us know people who are actually prepared to vote for George W. Bush in the upcoming election, despite his tragic record. we cannot afford to shrug and turn the other way any longer. we need to dialog with those misguided individuals who have fallen prey to the 'Fear Smear' tactics of those who OPPOSE LIBERTY but pretend to be patriotic, and we need to speak out with a rational patient coherent voice, at every opportunity, every chance we get. thank you for listening....

NEWS, Highlights, Updates & Corrections:

- don't sit at home this week! armageddon just around the corner, let's go dancing -

- the Borbetomagus show at 3030 is CANCELLED

- (the) Fiery Furnaces a relentless churning urn of burning carny funhouse, like a puppydog in a room full of rubber balls; the polar opposite of White Magic, who tediously plumbed the miniscule range between solipsism and narcissism, apparently not grasping that they were performing in a nightclub and not playing for friends in a coffeehouse, several double-espressos desperately needed - similar to waiting for novocaine to wear off

<Cost of War counter>
- new free mansions for Republicans in Florida! vote for me!
will Haliburton get a no-bid contract for rebuilding beaches?
if so, how much will it cost to replace a grain of sand?
never fear, it's not real money - it's taxpayer's money!
don't worry about future generations, there won't be any!
God taketh away and GWB giveth back, bigger & better
(unless you're in Iraq, where exact opposite is true)

- there was more great live music in the last week than you could get in most places in a year, even the city did a great job, except that all the parking spaces have vanished - another fabulous Wire/Bottle Festival has wrapped, only a few arrows were not bulls-eye lightning-bolts, every night bowled over by some act I've never heard before. the variety was intense, and a few were challenging enough to drive the weekend swillers out of the room, just a marvelous feat of programming by the bottle uber-booker, made possible by the premier magazine in the world for enthusiastic information from the fringes. most writers and periodicals take the mean-spirited elitist path, passing their cheap-shot criticisms like last night's cabbage, and you read them and you just want to stay home instead of trying something new. here is what i have to say to the bitter-merchants: just go hang yourself and spare us your illumination. anybody who is a bigger mope than me should be put out of his misery (don't worry, that still leaves you a lot of moping-room... ) enough cliches, go subscribe to The Wire already
